This month has been exceptionally busy with many field trips to beautiful destinations in the Upper Santa Ana River Watershed for underserved schools in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.

Waterkeeper expands partnerships in San Bernardino County by joining Inland Empire Resource Conservation District and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Trout in the Classroom program which in their pilot program, selected the AP Environmental Science class of Etiwanda High.

Earlier this month, Waterkeeper staff and the Stream Team conducted site checks throughout San Bernardino County to expand water quality testing sites, field trip destinations, and potential waterway cleanups.

The wet season has come to California in a big and wonderful way. The new year has been filled with pouring rain which has improved Southern California's drought status. Overall, 42% of California is now out of the drought, however, stormwater pollution is a concern when it begins to rain.

In light of the incoming administration planning to remove environmental laws and safeguards, the federal Clean Water Act, our waterways, and Waterkeeper organizations nationwide may be in peril.

We took the AP Environmental Science class of Patriot High on a field trip to the Santa Ana River at McLean Park! This amazing group of students braved the wet morning to learn about the history of the Santa Ana River, the impacts of storm-water runoff, and major issues pertaining to native and introduced species in the area. 

We focused outreach efforts to the most underserved schools in the Inland Empire, more specifically in the San Bernardino and Moreno Valley area. For our first program of the year we met with Mt. Vernon’s second grade class to talk about their watershed and the amazing things they will see and do on their field trip to the Inland Empire Utilities Agency’s Chino Creek Wetlands.
