| San Jacinto River Stage IV project |
As a member of the San Jacinto River Watershed Council, IEWK attended a meeting on 03/12/2008 about the engineering design & environmental status of the "San Jacinto Stage IV" project.
Led by the City of San Jacinto, they propose to levee a section of the river to stop the flooding of Sanderson St., State St. and Ramona Expwy. during floods. When these roads wash out, emergency vehicles cannot access hillside homes. Currently, there is no law requiring roads to stay out of floodplains.
Of course, changing a river does not come easily. Mystic Lake, San Jacinto Wildlife Area, dairies, farmland and nutrient TMDLs are located downstream of the project - and the project will facilitate future urban development.
Draft EIR is due for public review this summer. IEWK will share dates of all public scoping sessions as soon as we hear of them. (Photo courtesy of W. Hoose) |
