Dear
Friend,
|
|
Please enjoy our December e-newsletter and Happy
Holidays from all of us to all of you!
Inland Empire Waterkeeper (IEWK) is a grassroots nonprofit
water quality organization dedicated to enhancing and protecting the
Upper Santa Ana River Watershed through advocacy, education,
restoration and enforcement. We look forward
to working with concerned citizens like you to fulfill our
mission. |
| Volunteer to
Make a Difference! |
Join us and many other volunteers for an
Arlington Falls TRASH CLEANUP on Saturday,
January 26 from 8:00 am to Noon. This is a
casual, grassroots event so we ask you keep the kids (under 10) at
home, and bring your own trash bags and gloves. Trails
are sometimes slippery so wear good shoes & long
pants/shirt (poison oak and stinging nettles are
present). Pass the word to fellow enviro's! If you can
make it, drop a line to Info@iewaterkeeper.org. This is a wild and
beautiful canyon with an incredible waterfall that has been
littered with trash for a very long time. It conveys a
surprisingly large volume of spring water to the Santa Ana River,
and contains endangered species habitat so please, no dogs. IE
Waterkeeper is working with several organizations including
Riverside Land Conservancy.
Meet at our office at 8:00 am, (3741 Merced Dr., #F2,
Riverside) and we'll caravan to the site where there is ample street
parking. CANCELLED IN EVENT OF
RAIN. |
| Forest Canyon Profile: Lion Spring
in Morrell Cyn |
| Lion Spring, located
near the Morgan Trailhead at the top of Ortega Highway in the
Cleveland National Forest is a gem. Filled with ancient
oak trees, it is a good reminder of why this area was preserved so
long ago. Although we have not found flowing water yet, there
are indications of recent flow. Morgan trail is easy to find
and worth a hike (off Ortega Hwy at S. Main Divide). Thanks to Catrina & Edgar for
checking it each month!

| Spot-Checking Construction & Industrial
Sites |
|
Every time it rains, we race to
pre-selected construction and industrial sites to check whether
illegal or illicit discharges are occurring. We have already
identified one construction site in Riverside (TSS 3x the
threshold!) and two others along the River in Eastvale. Don't
be shy - residents can report illegal discharges to us, the
City, or the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control
Board.

Thank you to
Rep. Joe Baca (D, CA-43) for
introducing H.R. 4571 that would give, if passed, a $150 tax break
for people who conserve 40% of their household water use from the
previous year.
Congrats to the Santa Ana River Trail & Parkway
Partnership for receiving a $2.75 million grant from the
California Coastal Conservancy to construct 29 miles of trail.
Thank you to Senator Barbara
Boxer (D-CA) and Rep. Mary Bono (R,
CA-45) for introducing the "California Desert and
Mountain Heritage Act" that would protect 191,000 acres of
wilderness area, 5,000 acres of National Monument land and add 31
miles of four rivers to the National Wild and Scenic River
system. | |
