| Stop L.E.A.P.S! Save our Forest! |
L.E.A.P.S. is the Lake Elsinore Advanced Pump Storage project, which is a plan by Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and The Nevada Hydro Company - with possible financial backing from Siemens and Morgan Stanley - to, (1) dam a pristine canyon above Lake Elsinore to develop a 100-acre reservoir and (2) construct 30 miles of powerlines through the Cleveland National Forest. (the image here is a computer simulation of the powerlines in our Santa Ana Mountains, source: John Garrett, www.StopLEAPS.info) Originally, the plan was small and provided a nominal addition of power during peak hours. But it has grown exponentially. Approx. 10% of the Lake will be pumped up to the reservoir each night, and released during peak demand. What will this mean for the sediment? the fish? the habitat? the algae blooms? the residents? the recreational uses of the forest?
A former FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) commissioner, San Diego Gas & Electric, Metropolitan Water District, Riverside County Planning Dept., CAISO, California Electricity Oversight Board and over 1,000 local citizens and environmental organizations have raised concerns and objections to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) available at www.evmwd.com under LEAPS, under Informational Materials.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
READ and COMMENT on the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) due this Fall from the Water District at www.evmwd.com.

| IEWK Vessel has Arrived! |
|
We are very lucky to have finally located our vessel! An 18-foot Grumman lake canoe with motor, and seats 3, has been donated to IEWK! (pictured here) The donator who resides in Crestline will receive a generous tax-deduction. This completes an outstanding requirement from Waterkeeper Alliance® to obtain a vessel. Every "Keeper" in the country, whether Creekkeeper, Coastkeeper, Riverkeeper or Waterkeeper must have its own vessel with the Keeper name and logo on the side to patrol the Keeper's water(s). This harkens back to the 19th century English "Keeper" concept in which river "keepers" acted as wardens on private water bodies to ensure they were kept healthy, well-stocked and free of poachers. Look for our snazzy canoe complete with name and logo on one of our many Inland lakes!

| Forest Canyon Profile: Coldwater Creek |
Here is a photo of beautiful Coldwater Creek located above Glen Ivy Hot Springs, taken in late July. You can see why this was once the water supply for Corona! It flows year-round!
Three wonderful volunteers came out: Jennifer, Shelley and Steve who are not only local environmental professionals but also advocates for water quality.
We found all parameters to be below threshold, except for enterococcus (a bacteria), which we will investigate further this month.
Next Month: Main Street Canyon with volunteer, Kelly! | |
