Welcome to the second issue of the Inland Empire Waterkeeper E-newsletter!

Inland Empire Waterkeeper (IEWK) is a grassroots nonprofit water quality organization dedicated to enhancing and protecting the Upper Santa Ana River Watershed through advocacy, education, restoration, and enforcement.  We look forward to working with concerned citizens like you to fulfill our mission.
Welcome New IEWK Director & Waterkeeper!

Lee pic 2Mr. Lee Reeder has more than 30 years of experience in public relations, business development and communications.  He holds a bachelor's degree in management and a professional certificate in total quality management for service. Lee came to Inland Empire Waterkeeper after 10 years as a communications consultant for clients in health care and publishing.  He is also an accomplished scenic and nature photographer, and has been a volunteer for the San Gorgonio Wilderness Association in the San Bernardino Mountains, helping to protect the wilderness area at the source of the Santa Ana River.  Lee is the 2007 president of the Crestline Communities Development Alliance, a non-profit organization with the mission of beautifying several communities in the western San Bernardino Mountains.  Lee lives in Crestline with his wife, Shelby, and his two children, Natalie and Austen.

Lee will be working initially to build awareness in business, government and the public of the need to protect and preserve the Santa Ana River Watershed, while increasing public involvement in the mission and activities of Inland Empire Waterkeeper.

AutumnMany thanks to Autumn DeWoody for assuming the role of interim director for the past 6 months!  Mrs. DeWoody will now take on the role of Programs Director for IEWK.

Creek Monitoring & Sampling Started in Forest Canyons
sampler at PradoTwelve months of sampling and monitoring 6 forest creeks has started!  Many thanks to the volunteers from the local environmental community and the Chemistry Club at Cal State San Bernardino.  More help from the Elsinore Valley is needed!

Our grant will fund:
(1) advocacy for the Forest's wildlands and water quality;
(2) outreach and education the community, including students, on Forest benefits and why it should be preserved; and
(3) sample numerous Forest creeks to develop an baseline measure of forest health.

This effort is based on three proposed projects that will severely damage the Forest if built: the LEAPS (Lake Elsinore Advanced Pump Station) project, the mountain tunnel from Cajalco Road to Orange County, and the 241 toll road extension to Interstate 5.
IEWK Sponsors Santa Ana River Clean-up in October!
Martha McLean Park River pic

IEWK will sponsor and actively participate in the October 6th Santa Ana River Cleanup in Riverside.  We will join others around the world in the International Coastal Cleanup (www.oceanconservancy.org), the largest and most successful volunteer event of its kind.  "Since 1986, thousands of volunteers from around the globe have cleared over 100 million pounds of trash from 170,000 miles of shorelines, rivers, lakes and wetlands!"

IEWK is hoping to receive enough donations to purchase several water sampling kits in order to celebrate World Water Monitoring Day (www.worldwatermonitoringday.org), which starts September 18th and ends October 18th.  "Since 2002, more than 80,000 people have participated in 50 countries."  Join IEWK to sample River water for data that will reported to a national database - easy enough for the whole family!

The Riverside Cleanup will start at 8:00 am at 1995 Market Street, all are welcome to participate but dress to work!  Click on this link for flyer: www.iewaterkeeper.org/docs/SARcleanupflyer2.pdf

Update on Restoration Money Given to Lake Elsinore Project

The Lake Elsinore & San Jacinto Watershed Authority (LESJWA) will use their $25,000 for purchasing and installing "Biohaven Floating Islands" in Lake Elsinore, which have been shown to provide habitat benefits such as cover and food for fish, and reduce nutrients.  The "Islands" are just a part of the larger lake restoration project that is currently in final phases of design.  IEWK is very pleased to be able to convey these funds to support such a worthy project.

Background:  IEWK was pleased to settle with Corman-Leigh Communities over Clean Water Act violations at two developments in the IE: one in Lake Elsinore and the other in Big Bear.  A $50,000 settlement agreement was split in half for restoration projects in both communities.  Neither IEWK nor Orange County Coastkeeper received one penny.  We will include an update on the Big Bear project in next newsletter.
Please feel free to contact us at info@iewaterkeeper.org. Thank you for your continued interest in Inland Empire Waterkeeper.
