IEWK Success at Environment Expo, 2007!

IEWK made waves at Cal State San Bernardino's Environmental Expo April 21st, in honor of Earth Day. Hundreds of children were enchanted by our diorama that demonstrates how dirty urban runoff in our watershed ends up in the ocean.Visitors to the booth got involved by pointing out potential pollution sources in our Santa Ana River Watershed, and using squirt bottles to make it "rain" over the mountains, cropland, grass and city streets. As they watched the motor oil, pet waste, or fertilizers run into creeks and storm and out to the ocean, kids would shout, "Eew, that's gross!" or "Yuck, I don't wanna swim in that!"

Many families who stopped by the diorama accepted our challenge to find ways they can reduce water pollution in their neighborhood and community, and to spread the word!  We also debuted our new Waterkeeper banner and t-shirts, and gathered emails from folks interested in volunteer work.

Thanks to all who stopped by the booth at this exciting event!

IEWK Awarded Grant to Advocate for Forest
IE Water TestingThe Cleveland National Forest is a rich source of beauty, wildlife, and adventure.  We have received a grant to:

(1) advocate for the Forest's wildlands and water quality;
(2) outreach and educate the community, including students, on Forest benefits and why it should be preserved; and
(3) sample numerous Forest creeks to develop an baseline measure of forest health.

This effort is based on three proposed projects that will severely damage the Forest if built: the LEAPS (Lake Elsinore Advanced Pump Station) project, the mountain tunnel from Cajalco Road to Orange County, and the 241 toll road extension to Interstate 5.
As this exciting project launches in the coming months, there will be many volunteer and intern opportunities with IE Waterkeeper.   Get Involved!
IEWK Clean Water Legal Action
IEWK Sues Water Quality Violators
Notices of Intent To Sue have been sent to six industries in the Inland Empire for violating their industrial NPDES permits with consistent, flagrant and large illegal discharges that end up at the sewage treatment plant in Corona and/or waters of the U.S.  Our goals are to raise awareness of these violations and others occurring in Corona, and to find an agreeable settlement situation that will keep this from happening again.  Neither IEWK nor OCCK will receive one penny from these lawsuits.

IEWK Settles with Montclair Scrapyard

A settlement has been reached between IEWK and Tri-Alloy Scrapyard in Montclair, to remedy consistent, illicit and illegal discharges to waters of the U.S.  The property owner has opted to tear down and rebuild the facility, and IEWK will assist the owner in selecting water quality systems (BMPs) to ensure this will not happen in the future.  Neither IEWK nor OCCK will receive one penny from these lawsuits.

Please feel free to contact us at info@iewaterkeeper.org. Thank you for your continued interest in Inland Empire Waterkeeper.

Sincerely,
